Intel has said it will open an innovation, research and development centre in Taiwan.
The NT$300 million Intel Innovation Centre in Taipei will start out with 25 scientists, with the number to increase to 50-60 in a couple of years.
The centre will help Taiwan move to an "era of innovated in Taiwan from manufactured in Taiwan", Intel chief executive Craig Barrett said.
He added the island must continue to move up the value-added chain of manufacturing to remain a step ahead of China.
The centre would work with academic institutions and businesses to convert ideas into the next generation of products, he told reporters.
It is expected to accelerate convergence of computing and communications, explore innovative technologies and develop standards for communications infrastructure in Taiwan.
"The convergence of computing, communication and content is under way, and presenting a wealth of opportunity for technology innovation and creation," Mr Barrett said.
"Innovators create the future and Taiwan has a unique opportunity to build upon its strengths in design and manufacturing to play a key role in the creation of future technologies," he said.
