Taiwan is reporting a shortage of wireless LAN 802.11 (Wi-Fi) chipsets, with equipment manufacturers reluctant to shift from the 802.11b standard to the faster 802.11g standard, which was ratified in June. Following ratification of 802.11g, suppliers cut back on producing 802.11b chipsets, but demand for the older product has stayed firm. 802.11b is particularly popular for USB and PCMCIA cards for external Wi-Fi connectivity.
Some Taiwanese manufacturers of Wi-Fi cards and equipment have said their production has been affected by the shortage of 802.11b chipsets, and some say delivery times have been extended.
The three largest manufacturers of Wi-Fi products in Taiwan are CyberTAN Technology, GemTek Technology and Global Sun Technology. All three are complaining of tight capacity.
