Intel won't lose to AMD on price for china

Thursday, August 28, 2003
AMD will not have a low-cost edge in China, where the rapidly growing market is sensitive to price, said Intel chief executive Craig Barrett.

AMD has said it plans to grow its market share in China at double the rate of the overall market in the country. The chip making company, which takes 20 per cent of the global chip market, entered China in June when HP the sixth largest computer seller in China with three per cent of the market share--started selling two computer models in the country using AMD chips.

Intel, the global microprocessors giant, dominated the China market until AMD's recent entry. Barrett said in the report that Intel offers a value-added product independent of price, and the company performs a better job than rival AMD by investing heavily in research and development, new products, new manufacturing technology and new manufacturing plants.

Barrett was speaking in Chengdu, in China's Sichuan province, where Intel will invest US$200 million in creating a center for testing and assembling microprocessors. He is currently on a tour through Asia, and has delivered public addresses in Taiwan and Malaysia.
