Intel to open R & D center in Korea

Friday, August 29, 2003 Intel said it plans to open an R&D center in South Korea by the end of 2003 to focus on technologies and standards for the digital home and wireless communications..

Craig Barrett, Intel chief executive officer, informed South Korea's President Roh Moo-hyun of Intel's plan in a private meeting, the report said, but that financial terms were not disclosed.

"Korea's broad use of digital capabilities, knowledge in consumer electronics and growth of wireless communications make it ideal for the research and development center," the report quotes Barrett as saying in a statement. Devices and services set for investigation include Ultra Wideband to increase bandwidth for in-home and in-office communications and wireless broadband access. This week Barrett has been on a tour of Asia that included Taiwan, Malaysia, China and Korea and made investment announcements in each country
