Intel Centrino mobile technology is becoming a fundamental platform in the new generation of notebook computers, and is helping notebooks to overtake the popularity of desktop computers.
Notebook industry leaders, Quanta Computer Inc. and Compal Electronics, have been the major benefactors with large injections of foreign investors in the last few months.
In July, Quanta and Compal have seen the foreign holdings of their stock increase to new yearly highs of 20 percent and 43 percent respectively. Inventec Corp., Twinhead International Corp., Arima Computer Corp. and Clevo Co. have also seen their share prices boosted by a wave of incoming foreign capital.
Analysts stated that even though the growth in the notebook industry has stabilized, local manufacturers are still receiving large orders from international brands, so the industry is still worth watching.
Acer Inc., which has it's own brand of notebooks, is also promoting Centrino mobile technology in its products.
Furthermore, starting in the third quarter, HP, Dell and IBM will also be producing new products to take better advantage of Centrino capabilities.
All this indicates that Centrino mobile technology has become a fundamental component of the notebook industry and its market share is set to increase.
Quanta and Compal, who control about 60 percent of the Taiwan's production of notebooks and have strong relations with HP and Dell, indicated that the proportion of orders for notebooks containing Centrino mobile technology currently only stands at about 35 percent, but is expected to increase to 50 percent by year-end.
Other more optimistic companies have forecast the Centrino mobile technology platform to obtain 75 percent market share in the fourth quarter. And, everyone agrees that if the Intel drops the price of the technology, acquisition of market share will accelerate further.
Quanta and Compal hope the major benefits of Centrino mobile technology, low power usage and wireless capabilities, will help broaden the notebook market and assist notebooks to overcome the popularity of desktop computers.
Based on the strength of the Centrino platform, Quanta and Compal are both optimistic about second half revenues. At the end of July, Quanta has had a run of nine months of new revenue highs and hopes August and September will continue the trend.
