Flat panel TV taking hold

TECO Electric and Machinery Co. announced that the revenue for the second half of the year will be coming from flat-panel display after showing strong demand in the local market. TECO is expected to post NT$23-24 billion in sales in 2003 up from the NT$17 billion recorded last year.

"TECO is now at a turning point as liquid crystal display televisions is making way for a revival," said by TECO President S. C. Lin. TECO is presently controlling 65 percent share of the local television market, which the local demand for LCD TV is expected to be 50,000, or 60,000 sets this year and for next year, the figure will double, Lin said. TECO is expected to ship about 100,000 flat-screen televisions this year with shipments expected to jump to 710,000 sets next year.

TECO is also hoping that the only in local market, but also hoping that the international markets will also have the same response as in Taiwan."We'll sell brand-name products as well as provide OEM services," said by Frank Wu, TECO's chief executive of Consumer Appliance and Service Sector.

Beside TECO, other top Taiwanese brand like Kolin Co and Tatung Co also started shipping either plasma-display panel (PDP) TVs or LCD-TVs. Large LCD TV sizes ranging from 26-inch to 40-inch. The price for LCD TV is cheaper compared to plasma display panel (PDP), more than half of the prices.
