Intel will unveil two new processors in its Itanium chip family for high-end servers, including a low-power chip previously known as Deerfield.
The company said its latest 64-bit chips are designed for systems running at least two processors. Intel had unveiled other new Itanium 2 additions in May.
One Itanium 2 processor will run at a clock speed of 1.4 gigahertz. The Low Voltage Itanium 2, which will consume about half the power of the current Itanium 2 processors, runs at 1 gigahertz. It has a maximum power consumption of 62 watts, and can be used for lower-cost systems and systems in a network where power conservation is important.
The 1.4 gigahertz dual-processor chip will enable servers that cost less than $7,000 to have supercomputing-like performance for the scientific and technical markets.
Intel said its new Itanium 2 chips are available now at prices of $1,172 for the 1.4 gigahertz chip, and $744 for the low-voltage chip, in quantities of 1,000.
