Intel unveiled a pair of high-performance, programmable processors, MXP5800 and MXP5400 which are designed for document imaging. The chips were developed in conjunction with Xerox.
The target market for the processors are manufacturers of mid-range and high-end digital copiers, scanners, printers, and multi-function devices. Combining application-specific integrated circuits with a microprocessor, the chips can be programmed by hardware makers using software during the design process.
Intel also released a development kits for the two processors. Priced at $2,995, it includes the new chips, a PCI development card, programming tools, sample code, and documentation.
The MXP5800 is priced at $68 in lots of 10,000, while the MXP5400 costs $51 in the same quantities.
Intel expects that both will be available in volume by the end of the year. According to Xerox, its first MXP5800/5400-based products will appear in 2004.
