Worldwide flash card market in 2003 is expected to hit a 38 percent increase year over year reaching $2.75 billion, according to Gartner Inc. The recent NAND component price declines have helped the sales, the company said. Flash cards offer a variety of incompatible formats from different manufacturers and the standardization is far from happening.
"The SD Card and Memory Stick are forecast to be the dominant flash cards, capturing a combined revenue share of 65 percent by 2007," the company said. "These formats are expected to prevail because they have strong industry support combined with compelling attributes in a small form factor."
Gartner said the outlook for the flash card market is promising because the outlook for current and future applications such as digital, mobile phones, and digital video cameras is strong.
