AMD wins discrimination lawsuit

Monday, September 15, 2003 A U.S. court today ruled that Advanced Micro Devices did not discriminate against a former executive who claimed his career went into a tailspin because he is Muslim..

Last year, Walid Maghribi, who was formerly in charge of AMD's memory chip unit, sued AMD, claiming his career fell on hard times after he told AMD Chairman Jerry Sanders he was a Lebanese-American Muslim after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.

Maghribi, who resigned in December 2001 after working at the company for 16 years, "alleged that he was asked to alter terms of a joint venture he was negotiating with Fujitsu in a way that would have undermined him," the report said. Sanders and AMD President Hector Ruiz both testified at the trial last month and denied the allegations, according to the report.

"I'm disappointed with the decision, but that is the justice system here. The jury has spoken and I respect that, said Maghribi who is now the president and chief executive of chip maker Sipex Corp. in Milpitas, Calif.
