HP choose Transmeta for thin client line

Monday, September 15, 2003

HP and Transmeta announced add-ons to HP's thin client line, which, like the first thin client, will use Transmeta's Crusoe microprocessors.

The computer manufacturer will incorporate the 733MHz Crusoe chip into its t5500 thin client and the 533MHz Crusoe chip into its t5300 thin client. This fills out the line first announced in May with the high-end t5700 incorporating Transmeta's 1GHz microprocessor.

HP chose Transmeta over competitors such as Intel and AMD because of its high performance, low energy draw and low heat generation, according to Seamus Meagher, product manager at the Santa Clara, Calif.-based microprocessor start-up.

HP's thin client line is designed as a replacement for desktop PCs in environments that require centralized data and IT services. In PC environments of 100 users, it can take three to five days to deploy new virus updates or application upgrades, Meagher said. Such operations take about 10 minute in thin client environments, he said.

The thin client deal marks the second Transmeta has inked with HP. The computer manufacturer has also incorporated the Crusoe chip in its tablet computer, the HP TC1000. Sony and Fujitsu have also used Transmeta microprocessors in their notebook devices.

Transmeta is expected to announce details about its next generation chip, Efficeon, at the Microprocessor Forum in San Jose, Calif., in October.
