Computex opens Monday in Taipei

Finally, the Asia largest IT hardware exhibition, COMPUTEX Taipei 2003, starts today as thousands of professional buyers marched toward the Taipei World Trade Center. In today¡¯s ribbon cutting are: Taiwan's President Chen Shui Bian, Minister Yi Fu Lin of the Ministry of Economic Affairs (MOEA), Taipei city Mayor Ma Ying Jeou Ma, Taipei Computer Association (TCA) Chairman Dr. Frank Huang, CETRA's President Yuen Chuan Chao. Also present at the ceremony are vice president of sales and marketing for Intel Corp. Jason Chen, Microsoft¡¯s vice president of worldwide device solutions sales Phillip Swan. According to the organizers of COMPUTEX Taipei, CETRA and TCA, 1,241 local and overseas exhibitors have set up 2,419 booths for this year's trade show, up 12 percent and 5 percent respectively over the previous year, according to CETRA. Foreign companies from 19 countries across North America, Europe, Asia and the Middle East have 267 booths at the event.

Some of the better-known overseas companies represented at Computex are Philips, Texas Instruments, Intel and National Semiconductor. Taiwanese manufacturers such as Acer, BenQ, VIA Technologies, Micro-Star International, Asustek Computer and Teco Electric & Machinery will also have their latest products on display. COMPUTEX Taipei was postponed due to severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS), which claimed 84 lives from 671 infections in Taiwan few ago earlier.

Nevertheless, COMPUTEX Taipei is estimated to bring in more than US$30 billion worth of business opportunities for Taiwanese IT manufacturers. On the first four days of Computex Taipei 2003 will be limited professionals buyers and exhibitors representatives so they can create and make business deals comfortably. And on the last day, the exhibition will be opened to public on Friday from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Admission will cost NT$200.
