A chipmaker from Taiwan is said to have plans to invest US$50 million in Hynix Semiconductor , a Korean DRAM maker, and is interested in Hynix's production of NAND-type flash memory products.
The move is aimed at purchasing NAND chips at a discounted price, said market watchers.
Hynix and ST Micro Electronics agreed in April 2003 to jointly manufacture and promote NAND flash memory chips and release a 512Mb product in the latter half.
ST is said to have invested US$150 million into the business.
Samsung and Toshiba Corp currently control the NAND memory market.
