Worldwide PC shipments were up 15.7% from last year to 38.4 million, outpacing the previous IDC own forecast by 5 percentage points, the research firm said.
Portable computers sales in US and Europe have been most impressive. Consumers and small businesses continued to contribute the most to growth, but purchases by corporations appear to be growing slightly for the first time in years, said IDC.
Consumer spending helped the No. 2 PC seller, Hewlett-Packard Co., gain ground on bigger rival Dell Inc. H-P's PC shipments grew 28 percent, just above Dell's 27.9 percent growth. Dell ended the quarter with a 17.4 percent share of the market, down from 17.8 percent in the second quarter. H-P's share rose to 17.1 percent from 16.2 percent.
