Sales of LCD televisions look set to double next year, analysts said. The industry is expected to boom as liquid crystal display (LCD) TVs come down in price with the introduction of major new production capacity, mostly in Korea and Taiwan, in the next two years.
Executives and analysts believe LCD TV production will double next year to between eight and 10 million sets from about four million in 2003 and less than one million in 2002. The annual worldwide TV market is about 150 million units.
Some analysts said major growth will not come until 2005 at the earliest as the price will come down to the effordable level in 2005 onwards.
Many of the industry's largest manufacturers are in the process of building new production lines to make the next generation of large flat panel displays, the central component of LCD televisions.
The industry's largest flat panel producers include the LG Philips joint venture, with about 22 percent of the market; Samsung Electronics, with 19 percent; and Taiwan's AU Optronics Corp, with 12 percent.
