Motorola has selected Trolltech's application development framework, Qt/Embedded, for the new Linux operating system-based A760 smartphone.
The previously announced A760, Motorola's first Linux handset, will see the added Qt/Embedded modular platform allow for customized solutions, the companies said.
"Motorola's commitment underscores Linux as a viable operating system for mobile phones," said Mike Sudol, VP and general manager for Motorola's GSM products in Asia/Pacific, in a statement. "We believe that this platform creates a compelling, open alternative for smart mobile phones, and the combination of Linux and Trolltech's technology provides a flexible and customizable operating environment."
Motorola's support for the OS is a big boon for the Linux community and puts it in stead with the likes of IBM, a longtime Linux supporter.
"We are also excited for the Linux community," said Eirik Chambe-Eng, Trolltech's president and co-founder, in a statement. "As the world's premier producer of embedded electronic solutions, Motorola's choice strengthens Trolltech's solutions based on embedded Linux as a serious alternative to Windows Mobile and Symbian in the quest for smartphones."
