ATI Technologies Inc. has signed an agreement with Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd. for "strategic cooperation" and working together on Samsung's next-generation digital televisions, ATI said Thursday (Nov. 6).
As part of the agreement, future Samsung digital televisions will include Xilleon and Nxtwave chips from ATI, which is based here.
ATI has an existing agreement with Samsung, ATI said, without outlining how the strategic cooperation would change their relationship. It did not say whether new Xilleon and Nxtwave chips were intended for use in televisions or when the chips or the televisions would be introduced.
Xilleon is a high-definition MPEG decoder chip; the NXT2003 is a single-chip ATSC/OpenCable digital demodulator chip, ATI said. ATI also makes the Theater 310, a receiver IC for NTSC, ATSC and digital cable reception, the company said.
The Xilleon 220 was introduced by ATI in October 2001 and has subsequently been designed into numerous digital televisions.
"Samsung recognizes ATI's world class MPEG decoder, and RF signal reception capability. Coupled with ATI's outstanding semiconductor and software capabilities, they are the technical leader in the visual display market," Chang-wan Hong, vice president of the visual display division at Samsung, said in a statement.
