Hynix Semiconductor’s reported plan to build an 8-inch fab in China, according to a news source from Korea.
Hynix plans to set up an 8-inch fab in China to by-pass anti-dumping duties imposed by the US and European Union (EU). The DRAM maker also hopes to shun tariffs by the China government by setting up the fab within the country.
Some industry observers said the 8-inch fab takes about two years to build and start operations and it is not cost-effective given rising capacity and yield rates in 12-inch production. In addition, the advantage of tax benefits in China will disappear after the country opens its door to the World Trade Organization (WTO).
