IBM announced it will use its 64-bit PowerPC 970 processor in a new blade server.
The PowerPC 970 is derived from the Power4 processor family currently used in the IBM full-size eServer pSeries servers supporting Unix and Linux operating systems.
The processor has 2-way symmetric multiprocessing capability and supports a base memory of 512Mbytes.
The new blade server, called the JS20, is targeted at a clustered server environment for the financial services, research and life sciences markets. The JS20 has a starting price of $2,699.
