Game consoles prices slashed ahead of Christmas

Tuesday, November 25, 2003
Christmas season is near, many game consoles such as Microsoft's Xbox, Sony's PS2 and Nintendo's GameCube are slicing their prices to increase sales revenues.

Microsoft Taiwan said it will cut the retail price of Xbox by around 10 percent from NT$6,600 to NT$5,980 each. Microsoft wants to use the price cuts to gain market share ahead of rival Sony Corp's PlayStation 2 (PS2). Sony Computer Entertainment Inc said earlier this month that it would cut the price for a PS2 by 21 percent and the retail price is set at NT$6,980 each.

Sony has sold about 250,000 PlayStations in Taiwan since 2000 but it is way behind when it compared to first generation PS1, which sold more than 20 million units. Local experts pointed out that Sony still lead local market because mainly to their software titles.

As for Nintendo Corp, the Japanese company has already reduced the price of its GameCube machines from NT$5,980 to NT$4,980 each last month, and will not make further changes in a short period of time, said Tsai Hsueh Wei, a director at Hak Uyu Co., a distributor of Nintendo products in Taiwan. Nintendo was once leader in game console was not able to make any progress even the company offer cheaper price compared to Sony's PS2 and Microsoft's Xbox. But many GameCube lovers won't loose hope since Eidos, which makes the Tomb Raider series, and Codemasters promise to make more games next year.
