Silicon Storage Technology Inc. plans to deliver a 2Gbit NOR chip by 2005 which will be co-developed with Powerchip Semiconductor Corp. of Taiwan, the company said. Manufactured at Powerchip's Hsinchu 300mm-wafer fab using 0.11-micron process technology, the 2Git NOR chip will be used to enter and compete in the flash data storage market.
The company sees the flash data storage market will eventually become a bigger market than DRAM.
The 2Gbit device will have the same pinout configuration as NAND flash of similar density, as well as compatible electrical specifications, the company said. Its large 2Gbit density will be competitive with traditional NAND flash data storage.
SST schedules the sampling in 2004 with mass production in 2005. Powerchip will sell the 2Gbit NOR chip under its own label and will pay royalties to SST, the company said.
Despite NAND's current dominant role in flash storage, the compamy said that NOR does has several advantages over NAND, including a faster data rate up to 4Mbits/s.
