National Semi reported upbeat earnings

Friday, December 5, 2003

National Semiconductor delivers a better-than-expected earnings with net income of $65.8 million, or 34 cents a share, a tenfold jump from the year-ago net income of $6.2 million, or 3 cents a share.

Revenue surged 12 percent to $473.5 million, up from $422 million a year ago. Chip orders for the next quarter jumped 29 percent.

The company seems to make the right cost control strategies by exiting the money-losing businesses such as information appliance chip business and cell phone processor business and focusing solely on its core analog chip business back in February.

The company also said it profited from a strong demand for analog chips, driven by improved sales of notebook computers, personal computers and flat-panel computer screens. National develops a wide variety of chips, including power management chips, temperature sensors and other chips for those markets.
