Elpida Memory has started shipping 1Gbit DDR2 SDRAM device on 2Gbyte registered modules.
4Gbyte registered dual in-line memory modules (DIMM) and 2Gbyte SO-DIMMs based on the 1Gbit device are currently under development and will be available next year, Jun Kitano, director of technical marketing at Elpida, said.
"As a leader in DDR2 architecture and DRAM technology, Elpida now has the highest data transfer rate combined with the industry's highest density component," Kitano said in a statement. "Elpida's module demonstrates the stability of the new 1Gbit DDR2 SDRAM component. This component paves the way for faster development of 1Gbit DDR2 SDRAM-based 2Gbyte unbuffered DIMMs for PCs, small outline DIMMs for notebooks, as well as 2 and 4 gigabyte registered DIMMs for server applications that need highest density, high-speed memory."
The DDR2 devices are produced at Elpida's 300mm facility in Hiroshima, and they utilize Elpida's newly developed 0.10-micron process technology to create a 68-ball FBGA package. The 1Gbit devices transfer data at up to 533Mbits/sec.
