Matsushita expands Shanghai 's Plasma TV Fab


Friday, December 12, 2003 Matsushita Electric have announced that it has expanded its Shanghai 's plasma display production in response to increasing worldwide demand for plasma TVs.

The announcement was made at its grand opening ceremony with MEI President Kunio Nakamura attending.

SMPD began its production of plasma display panels (PDP) in December 2002, with a capacity of 5,000 units per month. The capacity has now been expanded to 20,000 units per month in response to rapidly increasing demand of plasma TV's in the Chinese market. SMPD is the first company in China to achieve an integrated production system from the plasma panel to finished TV products.

According to Matsushita, PDPs are considered to be the most promising large-screen display devices for the digital networking era, with an expected global demand in excess of 4 million sets for 2005. In the Chinese market, the demand for plasma TVs is forecast at 300,000 sets for 2005. SMPD will expand its production, aiming to capture a 40% share of the Chinese domestic market. SMPD will also supply part of its output to the market overseas in order to establish the basis for its global business operation.
