Semi recovery adds job in Taiwan

Monday, December 15, 2003

After a three-year slump in the semiconductor industry, a worldwide industry recovery is becoming obvious in Taiwan, according to the Taipei Computer Association. Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. Ltd., for example, is expecting a huge increase in sales and, consequently, in production next year, which will require hiring 2,500 people, according to TSMC spokesman, Tzeng Jin Hao.

Nor is TSMC alone. All Taiwanese chip companies are expecting a strong recovery. Needed: 10,000 people.

The foundry is expected to expand 11.8 percent this year to $175 billion after growing only 2 percent last year, according to researcher Gartner Inc. TSMC next year plans to increase spending on new plants and equipment by a “large amount” to meet this rising demand, according to a statement made on Oct. 28 by TSMC's chairman Morris Chang.

TSMC rival United Microelectronics (UMC), is planning to add 1,000 new hires to its ranks. And the TFT-LCD industry will need an as-yet unspecified number of people to fill up their production facilities.

Makers of flat-panel displays used in computers and televisions have advertised in newspapers for personnel during the past weekend. AU Optronics Corp. (AUO), Taiwan's largest maker of flat-panel displays used in computers and televisions, plans to hire a record 1,500 employees next year, spokeswoman Anny Chan said. The company hired 1,400 last year and 1,000 in 2002. AUO had 7,645 employees at the end of 2002.
