Zander, aged 56, most recently was a managing director of Silver Lake Partners, a private equity fund focused on investments in technology-based industries. Zander is set to join Motorola with effect from January 5, 2004, Motorola said.

"Ed is recognized as one of the most outstanding business leaders and intellects in the field of technology and business operations," said John Pepper, director and chairman of the CEO search committee, in a statement.

"We are confident that he will bring to Motorola precisely that combination of strategic insight and imagination, operational discipline and decisiveness, and inspirational leadership needed for accelerated and sustained growth."

Mike Zafirovski, who had been tipped as a possible CEO for Motorola, is to remain as president and chief operating officer, the company said.

"Ed brings a wealth of experience to Motorola, and I believe that working together we can build upon Motorola's impressive legacy to continue to be a global leader in technology and communications," said Zafirovski in the same statement.

Zander left Sun in June 2002 to join Silver Lake Partners. Prior to joining Sun in 1987, he held senior management positions at workstation company Apollo Computer and minicomputer company Data General.

Chairman and chief executive officer Chris Galvin, a grandson of the founder of the company, said earlier this year that he would stand-down as soon as his replacement is named. He cited disagreements with the board over strategy as the reason for his resignation.

Soon after Galvin's announcement Motorola said it would spin-off its Semiconductor Products Sector as a separate company.
