Quanta Computer Inc. confirmed that a group of engineers at the mobile phone division have submitted their resignation letters and leave the company after Chinese New Year, according to a local newspaper.
Quanta shipped out 735,000 sets of mobile phones in November. Its annual mobile phone shipments will reach 6 million sets this year and the number is expected to double in 2004. Quanta indicated that its mobile phone business will continue to grow based on the previously-set timetable, despite the group's possible departure.
According to the news report, several local mobile phone manufacturers have targeted Quanta as their primary target for headhunting since Quanta successfully designed and manufactured the popular cell phone line GD55 for Panasonic earlier this year.
Asustek Computer was one of the company mentioned in the news report is believed to the direction of this group. Asustek is evaluating a plan to set up a communications division in order to tap the burgeoning mobile phone contract manufacturing market in Taiwan. Ausutek unveiled its first mobile phone under its brand name this October and sold several thousand of the model in November, boosting its confidence in the mobile phone business.
