SMIC perfected LCOS process for HDTV displays

Thursday, December 18, 2003 China's Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corp. (SMIC) said Wednesday (Dec. 17) it has formed a supply agreement focused on delivering silicon-based backplane circuits for Brillian Corp.'s HDTV products.

Under terms of the deal, foundry provider SMIC is providing silicon backplanes for Brillian's liquid-crystal-on-silicon (LCOS) Gen II microdisplays for rear projection, high-definition televisions. Brillian's first HDTV production light engine will debut at next month's 2004 Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. Brillian (Tempe, Ariz.) said its HDTV products will ship in mid-2004.

SMIC has developed a wafer-finishing process optimized for Brillian's LCOS technology. The collaboration has resulted in a new performance breakthrough for LCOS HDTV products, including on-screen contrast ratios as high as 2500:1 for cinematic picture quality.

"The HDTV market is poised for explosive growth both here in Asia and globally," said Richard Chang, president and CEO of Chinese foundry provider SMIC. "We are committed to delivering silicon solutions that address the performance needs in this market."

"Our strategy is to leverage our proprietary and patented LCOS Gen II technology, our systems integration expertise, and relationships with the industry's premier companies, such as SMIC, to offer complete 720p and 1080p HDTV systems in the over 50-inch diagonal screen size," said Vincent F. Sollitto, president and CEO of Brillian.

Earlier this year, Three-Five Systems Inc. decided to spin-off its LCOS Microdisplay division as a separate publicly traded company called Brillian.
