PCTEL Inc. and Intel Corp. have signed a broad cross licensing agreement involving modem technology, the companies said today.
Under terms of the agreement, Intel will receive a license to all of PCTEL's patents. PCTEL will in turn receive a cross-license to Intel-owned patents that relate to PCTEL's business and a one time $14.5 million payment.
Chicago-based PCTEL makes Wi-Fi and cellular software and software-defined radio products and access technology. The company shipped soft modems before selling its HSP modem product line to Conexant earlier this year, focusing on licensing efforts since that time, according to the company.
Since then PCTEL has sued Broadcom, 3Com, U.S. Robotics, Agere, and Lucent for patent infringement. The company recently settled with Broadcom.
"Intel has long believed in licensing intellectual property in exchange for fair value," Don Merino, director of strategic development for Intel, said in a statement. "We believe this agreement with PCTEL enables both companies to continue to develop products without fear of infringing on the other's intellectual property rights."
