Chip sales up in November

Monday, January 5, 2004

Global sales of semiconductors reached $16.1 billion in November, a 25.7 percent increase compared to a year ago and a fourth straight monthly growth, an industry group said on Monday.

Sales of memory chips showed growth above the normal seasonal increase, driven by strength in the personal computer market as well as in the market for portable music players and digital cameras, said the group.

The 26 percent year-on-year growth, in line with expectation from most analysts, is up from around 10 percent in June and July. Sales began to accelerate after those months.

Early this summer most analysts still expected sales growth in 2003 to be a modest 10 percent, as the industry's recovery from its worst downturn in 2001 and early 2002 was slowed down by the war in Iraq and the outbreak of the deadly Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) virus in Asia.
