Fujitsu Computer Products has announced one of the first notebook 2.5-inch hard-disk drives using the new serial ATA interface, the company said. Fujitsu aims to be early to market in an effort to capture the notebook market that are converging on serial interfaces and 2.5-inch form factors.
Fujitsu worked with Marvell Semiconductors to design a 1.5-Gbit/second SATA interface chip for the M40 drive, which supports both hot plugging and command queuing, or the ability to speed drive traffic based on priority sorting of ATA commands. The drive will come in 40-, 60- and 80-Gbyte capacities using a 5,400-rpm spindle rotation speed to achieve 1.5-millisecond track-to-track data transfer rates.
The drive will sample in the first quarter, with volume production expected in April. Fujitsu did not announce pricing but said the drive would initially carry a premium over its similar parallel ATA models.
