Online sales for November and December recorded a whooping $18.5 billion, an increase of 35 percent over the same period a year ago, said the market researchers which tabulated the data.
“This is the third straight season of record growth”, said the researcher.
Clothing led the way in online purchases with $3.74 billion in sales for the two-month, a jump of 40 percent over the holidays last year. Toys and video games ranked second, with sales of $2.2 billion, while consumer electronics, computer gear, and videos and DVDs rounded out the top five categories. Consumer electronics posted the smallest year-to-year increase of the bunch with sales just two percent above 2002's.
“The maturation of the Internet population, that people are more readily willing to move into online purchasing, is a strong reason why sales jumped,” said the researcher.
Another reason for the strong sales is due to the much better job that online retailers are doing in presenting their products as well as delivering them on time.
