IBM has struck an IT deal with Nokia, under which it will globally run helpdesk operations as well as manage and develop Nokia's desktop IT environment using its On Demand services.
The services agreement is valued at about $247 million (200 million Euros) over a five-year period. As part of this agreement around 430 people will join IBM from Nokia in 36 countries. The services under the agreement will be delivered in 57 countries.
"We have chosen to outsource the management of our desktop IT environment as part of an initiative to focus on core business infrastructure and IT activities and to improve service flexibility and cost efficiency, enabling a higher level of business agility," said Gordon Jack, VP of Nokia's business infrastructure unit, in a statement. "This agreement ensures that we benefit from IBM's latest technologies for our businesses through On-Demand services."
IBM noted its On Demand strategy Thursday in its Q4 2003 and full-year results. Samuel J. Palmisano, IBM chairman and CEO, said the service is "most encouraging."
"Our On Demand strategy is today a reality -- it has entered the mainstream, and it is increasingly driving our business results," he said in a statement. The agreement is subject to competition authorities' approval.
