Elpida Memory Inc has begun shipping a 2-gigabyte DRAM module that fits in a package measuring just 4.8mm thick.
The firm developed a similar 2GB DRAM module in November, but that package was more than 5.8mm thick, making it too big for practical applications.
Designed for use in high-performance servers, the new module is built from a set of 36 512MB DDR2 DRAM chips.
The company is offering the module in three configurations that differ in terms of clock speed (200 or 266MHz) and read/write speed (400 or 533Mbps). Prices for samples range from 153,900 yen to 248,400 yen apiece.
Elpida aims to produce the DRAM module at a rate of 5,000 units per month during the April-June quarter.
