Atmel returned to profitability in Q4 of last year, one quarter after it declared that the recovery was at hand.
The Silicon Valley chipmaker posted Q4 revenue of $380.5 million Thursday, up sequentially from Q3's $335 million and from Q4 2002 revenue of $304.6 million. Q4 net income totaled nearly $11 million, or 2 cents per share. Those results include a legal award of $37.9 million, which was partially offset by asset impairment charges totaling $27.6 million.
In the prior quarter Atmel posted a net loss of $31.8 million, or 7 cents per share. In the year ago period it posted a net loss of $16.2 million, or 3 cents per share, including $2.8 million worth of impairment charges.
Revenues for the full year 2003 totaled $1.3 billion, vs. $1.2 billion in 2002. Net loss for the year totaled $118 million, or 25 cents per share, vs. net loss of $641.8 million, or $1.37 per share on a fully diluted basis in 2002. The 2002 net loss included $383.8 million in impairment charges.
