The European Commission, a union made up of 15-European nations, has officially approved state fund of $680 million to aid Advanced Micro Devices Inc. in building a wafer fab in Dresden, Germany, according to a local news.
The grand will cover up to 22.67 percent of the projected costs of 2.4 billion euros to build a fabrication facility to make microprocessors on 300-mm wafers using 65-nanometer manufacturing processes, the news said.
"As the aid is limited to 22.67 percent gross of the eligible investment costs and the market for microprocessors is not in decline, the public grants will not lead to an undue distortion of competition," the Commission said in a statement.
The new fab is expected to create about 1035 jobs directly, and an additional 1170 jobs in a region. Production will start in 2005 with full capacity by 2007.
