Outlook on Set-Top-Boxes

Wednesday, February 18, 2004
Taiwan's manufacturers of digital set-top boxes (STB) expected to reach 4.44 million units this, up by 92 percent from last year’s statistic, according to the latest report from Industrial Development Bureau (IDB) under the Ministry of Economic Affairs (MOEA).

IDB's official Ko Sheng Min said: "The increase is a result of the US and countries in Europe switching to digital TV." Last year, Taiwan shipped 2.31 million set-top boxes, an increase of 16 percent from 2002. The sale of digital STB remains slow as the government and local cable-TV industry in a tug-of-war match regarding the price they are going to charge and how much is the loyalties.

IDB forecast the local demand for digital set-top boxes will reach 1.54 million by 2006 as the government set deadline for local television industry to switch to digital TV. IDB predicted that by 2006, the total shipment of digital STB from Taiwanese companies will reach 9.3 million units. Benefits from digital STB are internet accessibility, more programs to choose, clear and vivid pictures, programmable TV programs and many other vital information such as weather, stock and airline/hotel.

The US and Europe regions will have greatly change to enjoy digital STB first before elsewhere in the world. Japan, Korea, Singapore and Taiwan likely to switch to digital in next few years.
