The expansion projects from two of the Taiwan’s flat display panel makers, Chi Mei Optoelectronics Corp (CMO) and HannStar Display Corp., along with foreign firm Corning Inc. from the US will form a flat panel hub in the southern Taiwan.
CMO has rent a 300 hectares of land adjacent to Southern Taiwan Science Park (STSP) in Tainan, according to CMO's PR official, Loreta Chen. The new facility will be used for packaging, warehouse and other office departments. Presently, CNO has three facilities operating in STSO. According to HannStar's executive, Justin Chien, the company will invest up to NT$90 billion on a 6G fab and a color filter plant. The new plant will primarily produce bigger flat panels, 32-inch size and higher for LCD TV.
Corning has announced to build a glass-smelting plant in Tainan, which trigger local companies to move or expand facilities around the Tainan area. Separately, iSuppli/Stanford Resources predicts the shipments of LCD panels will amount to 115 million units in 2004. Sixty two percent of the 115 million units will be used in LCD monitors and the rest will goes to notebook PC.
The unit price of LCD panel expects to decline US$3~5 after much improvement in yield rates and capacity from the fifth-generation (5G) TFT LCD lines. Taiwan, South Korea and Japan are the major producers of LCD panels.
