Hitachi announced a 300GB disk drive and its plans to unveil a 2.5-inch drive for the corporate market.
Hitachi Global Storage Technologies said the 300GB drive is designed to handle tasks such as online transaction processing and data analysis. Hitachi also said that next week it will demonstrate 2.5-inch and 3.5-inch drives similar to products unveiled by rivals Seagate Technology and Fujitsu.
Besides focus on enterprise market, Hitachi is also making a strong push into the consumer electronics market. The company said hard drives are becoming a popular choice for data storage for digital video recorders and digital music players.
Worldwide shipments of hard drives in emerging consumer applications is expected to grow from about 20 million last year to somewhere in the range of 88 million to 100 million in 2007, anaylst said. Total shipments of hard disk in 2007 is expected to be roughly 380 million.
