Nokia showed off its model 9500 smartphone, which adds Wi-Fi connectivity to voice and data cellular capabilities. The Nokia 9500 comes with a 640 x 200 color screen, which is larger than most cell phone displays, and a thumb keyboard.
Nokia said in a statement that the Symbian platform-based device is aimed at enterprise users and is being tested by companies such as Pfizer, Ricoh and Daimler Chrysler. It comes pre-loaded with IBM mobility software, including WebSphere Everyplace Access Client and the Lotus Sametime enterprise instant messaging solution. Nokia said it also is using IBM's Java environment for mobile computing. Other vendors, such as Siebel Systems, also have adapted their products to work on the device, Nokia said.
The phone is expected to cost about US$1,000, although some wireless carriers may choose to subsidize that price. It is expected to ship later this year.
