Monday, March 8, 2004
Last week, Ministry of Economic Affairs (MOEA) announced that Taiwan's 2008 international exposition will be held in Taoyuan and Tainan counties, located in northern and southern Taiwan, respectively, after six hours of qualification review on five competing counties.

Following results of an examination by MOEA's "2008 Taiwan Expo Sites Review Commission," MOEA Vice Minister Shih Yen Hsiang announced, "The commission proposes that Tainan County and Taoyuan County are the main sites of Taiwan Expo." The five counties are Taoyuan, Miaoli, Changhwa, Jiayi and Tainan. Economics Minister Y.F. Lin held a screening meeting and announced the decision. Jiayi was chosen as an alternative site for the fair if any of the determined counties fail to hold the event. The screening committee said that Taoyuan County was picked up on grounds that it is the county where the Chiang Kai-sheik International Airport is located and 45 of the Taiwan's top 100 manufacturers have major operations.

Shih added, "They also suggested an accessorial site possible located at Chaiyi County, if the top two retreat." "The final sites list will be decided by the Executive Yuan later," Shih concluded, "Then another task commission will deliberate the details in cooperation with the central and local governments." The budget of Taiwan Expo plan, a part of 10 New Major Construction Projects, which is estimated at NT$ 30.1 billion including a NT$19.5 billion for public works. Lin's ministry will budget around NT$30.1 billion (US$912 million) for the fair to tap an estimated 54.6 billion (US$1.6 billion) worth of business opportunities for Taiwan's economy by luring 5.5 million tourists during the 150-day fair.
