Wednesday, March 10, 2004

The U.S.-based Sun Microsystems is considering setup a radio frequency identification (RFID) testing center along with the development of related technologies in Taiwan.

Kevin Mayo, chief architect of Asian Pacific Infrastructure Solutions of Sun Microsystems, indicated that Sun Microsystems has already established two RFID testing centers for the applications of product distribution system. One is established in Dallas of Texas of the United States for the application of Wal-Mart, and the other in Scotland of the United Kingdom for Tesco.

Mayo further disclosed that the company intends to set up two RFID technology centers in the Asia-Pacific area. One of them will be set up in Australia, and other one may be established in either Taiwan or S. Korea or other nations in Asia. And the final location of the center will depend on the economic situation and government support of any particular country in Asia.

Several local news reports said that Sun Microsystems is recently discussing the details on the project with Institute for Information Industry (III) and the Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI), Taiwan's two semi-official researching organizations. Hwang Jong Chiou, director general of Industrial technology Department under the Ministry of Economic Affairs (MOEA), said that the government welcomes the project, but did not received any application from Sun Microsystems. MOEA recently started to promote the application of RFID technology and urged III and ITRI to develop or introduce in such technology.
