LCD production soaring on OEM demand

Taiwan firms are reportedly gaining more LCD TV orders from Japan clients according to Taiwan Electrical and Electronic Manufacturers' Association (TEEMA). TEEMA secretary general Chen Fu Hsiung said that most major companies in Japan, recognizing the importance of cutting costs, have decided to move their production of middle-to-low-end information appliance (IA) products to, or outsource them from, lower-cost regions such as Taiwan.
 
A group of makers with strong contract manufacturing capability on the island are also actively striving to win more contract LCD TV production business, including Quanta Computer Inc., BenQ Corp., Compal Electronics Inc., Lite-On IT Corp., Sampo Technology Corp., and Teco Co. etc. Most big international IT brands, such as Dell, Hewlett-Packard Co. (HP) and Gateway, have placed orders for LCD TV with Taiwan contract partners.
 
In related news, Taiwan firms holding better position in production due to lower cost and high efficient LCD panel productions, according to Ken Ko, an analyst at market researcher Topology Research Institute. Several factors that drive Taiwan into top are strict cost management and the ability to supply massive volume will give an advantage to electronics manufacturers to meet the world's big demand for LCD TVs by 2006. Topology's projection, the global demand for LCD TVs will soar to around 30 million sets by 2006. This year the demand will be about 10 million sets.
