Intel paid $225 million to Intergraph to end dispute

Tuesday, March 30, 2004 Intel agreed to pay Intergraph Corp. $225 million to settle the remaining issues in the companies' long-running patent dispute, the company said.

Intergraph claimed that Intel's Itanium chip for servers and high-end workstations infringed its patents for speeding up the inner workings of a microprocessor. In 2002, a federal court in Texas ruled in favor of Intergraph.

As part of the settlement, Intergraph is also dropping its suit against Dell Inc., which has a deal with Intel. Intel said it has settled with Dell over the claims out of court.

Intergraph said it is still pursuing claims against Gateway Inc. and Hewlett-Packard Co. over the same patents. In an earlier patent dispute involving technology used in Intel's Pentium chips, Intel paid Intergraph $300 million.
