3G not likely to take off this year

Monday, April 5, 2004

3G mobile telephony will make very little impact in 2004, according to this year's 3GSM Survey published by consultant company ARC Group.

Over half of the industry professionals questioned in the survey believe 3G will have little influence this year, although 8 percent thought it would be very influential.

Only 35 percent believed their home operators would launch either 3G UMTS or 2.5G EDGE networks this year.

Wi-Fi and Bluetooth technologies are tipped to be the most widely used short-range wireless technologies in 2004, but only 12 percent believed Wi-Fi hotspots would have a significant impact on their business strategy in 2004
