A weekend power outage in Taiwan caused DRAM prices to jump over the last few days.On Saturday (April 10), a power outage hit Hsinchu, Taiwan's largest technology park, according to the report. Powerchip Semiconductor Corp., ProMos Semiconductor Inc., Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. Ltd., Winbond Electronics Corp., and other Taiwan chip makers were impacted, according to the report.
Many of Taiwan's chip makers lost a half day of production due to the power outage, prompting a jump on DRAM prices, the report said. "According to online chip clearinghouse DRAMeXchange, spot prices of the most popular DRAM chips-- 256 megabit double data rate chips that run at 400 megahertz, or DDR-400--rose to $6.55 Monday from US$6.43 Friday, the highest level since Jan. 24, 2003, when the average price hit $6.58," according to the report.
