Samsung Electronics is expected to move pass Intel as the leader capital expenditures spending for 2004, according to a report from IC Insights.
Samsung's 2004 capex is expected be $4.1 billion, up 15 percent over 2003. In comparison, Intel, the long time leader in this category, is projected to spend $3.8 billion in 2004, up only 4 percent, according to IC Insights.
Seventeen chip makers are projected to become part of the elite $1 billion capital spending club in 2004, compared to only seven semiconductor vendors in 2003, according to the market researcher. Eighteen chip makers made the list in 2000.
Among the 2004 members, which are projected to spend more than $1 billion in random order, are Samsung, Intel, UMC, TSMC, Infineon, AMD, SMIC, STMicro, Sony, Micron, TI, NEC, Toshiba, Renesas, Matsushita, Hynix, and Nanya.
The reseracher firm raised the forecast for IC capital spending to $44.4 billion in 2004, up 53 percent from $29.1 billion in 2003. It also projected that capital spending will increase 11 percent, hitting $49.3 billion in 2005, but dropping 18 percent to $40.2 billion in 2006.
