China confirms 3 new cases of SARs

Tuesday, May 4, 2004 China has upgraded three suspected SARS cases to confirmed ones, bringing the total number of infected people in the country to nine so far this year.

This time last year, China's government was harshly criticised for its initial cover-up of the outbreak.

But one year on, the mood in the Chinese capital is more calm this time round.

This is evident during the country's one-week long May Day vacations, which started on 1 May.

Many holiday-goers are not deterred by the Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) disease.

At the Chaoyang Park in central Beijing, many have gathered to enjoy its wide open spaces or the week-long music festival.

Despite the heavy rains during most parts of the May Day holidays, the turnout at the park has been overwhelming.

But this time last year, it was an entirely different story.

Then, everyone donned masks and were afraid to step out of their homes.

"Last year, we were really frightened. But now, everyone is familiar with SARS and can take preventive measures. The government is also adopting the right measures. So there's nothing to worry about," said a man at the park.

With greater SARS awareness, few are worried about the possibility of another massive outbreak.

"The authorities have widely disseminated information on SARS prevention and control. So now, people know which hospital they should go to if they have a high fever," said another man.

"I feel safe so long as I don't travel by plane or train. I think that's the best way of preventing SARS," said a third.

Indeed, last year's outbreak has instilled what some hope will be life-long habits among many Chinese.

"My teacher tells us to wash our hands more often, and to clean our tables and chairs more regularly. My classroom is often sprayed with disinfectant," said a student.

Authorities are said to be giving full disclosure on the number of confirmed and suspected cases.

"After last year's experience, this year we have a better work plan, and better strategies in tackling SARS. Our approach this year is generally more effective and has achieved better results," said Beijing Vice Mayor Zhang Mao.

This latest outbreak appears to have been isolated to a Beijing laboratory.
