HP to release PCs for gamers

Monday, May 10, 2004

Hewlett-Packard will soon launch a personal computer targeted at gamers in a move to expand its share into this growing market.

The Compaq X machine will sport the latest hardware for $1,799. Just as important, gamers will be able to customize the computer to their diverse tastes.

Once, the gamer's market was too small for the larger PC makers to enter. But as the market grew, big PC makers wanted in because it offered them a chance to raise the average sales price for their computers. Dell and Gateway dove into the market with machines that undercut the competition.

Now the market is about 20 million gamers, according to HP's research. Of that number, the company estimates 10 million are hard-core gamers who build their own PCs. But HP is targeting gamers in their late 20s and 30s who don't have the time to construct a computer from scratch.

The new machine will be available for sale on HP's Web site starting in July.
