Infineon Technologies AG is considering whether to sell or spin-off of its DRAM memory chip business, according to a news source.
The DRAM business has been subject to volatile pricing and was the main reason for two years of heavy losses at the German chipmaker before a recent recovery. Although the company had promised to reduce its dependency on DRAM the sector is still responsible for 40 percent of sales.
Although no decision has been taken, the business was "as good as gone", and that an announcement was expected within a few weeks, said the news source.
Should that occur, Infineon would see 40 percent less in its sales and would find other ways to make up for it.
